Eating Mud Cookies to Survive, Poor in Haiti Desperate

With food prices on the rise, Haiti's poor have had to take desperate measures to fill their bellies. They are eating mud. According to a report from the Associated Press, food prices around the world have spiked because of higher oil prices, needed for fertilizer, irrigation and transportation. Prices for basic ingredients such as corn and wheat are also up sharply, and the increasing global demand for biofuels is pressuring food markets as well.
That means the poor is Haiti are eating mud to survive. In Haiti, two cups of rice sells at $0.60 up by $0.10 from December last year. With most Haitians surviving for only $2 per day, the mud cookies selling at $0.05 is a "natural choice" to stave off hunger and probably survive, at least for the day.
